After our study of the Native Americans, we moved on to a couple of the Spanish explorers (mainly Christopher Columbus) and then now onto the pilgrims and Squanto. Below are our turkey hand-prints we did this week (even though they did not have turkey at the first Thanksgiving). After doing them Emily wanted to paint a turkey on her own (above picture), and she did a pretty good job too! He is about to eat a cricket, in orange to the right of him.
Joseph's handprints above, and Emily's below! He did very well, especially since I had to paint each finger a different color. I made two paintings each, so this morning in extended session he did NOT want anything to do with hand painting!
Below Emily painted (in the background) a picture of the Mayflower in the ocean...and then we built our own Mayflower using cardstock and toliet paper tubes.
Friday we made our Pilgrim man and woman, and Squanto. As we have been learning about the 1st Thanksgiving it has really made a new impression on me for some reason. Yes every year we celebrate Thanksgiving, and every year we list our things we're thankful for...but for some reason it has really been magnified to me of what that 1st Thanksgiving was all about. The pilgrims left there own country to find somewhere to live where they could worship GOD freely. Half of those who came over on the Mayflower died that first winter when they got here...HALF now!!! Once here, by God's grace, HE brought Squanto, who spoke English, to help teach them how to fish, farm and live pretty much. I'm sure you all know all of this, but if you're like me you might have forgotten some of it. But Squanto was taken as a slave to England years before the Mayflower set sail for the Americas. It reminds me so much of the story of Joseph in the Old Testament. How what man intends for evil, GOD intends for good. Had Squanto not been taken to England as a slave he would have never learned how to speak English, and could not have helped the Pilgrims. It just blows my mind to think how God arranged all that.
BUT it also brings tears to my eyes to see how our country was founded and how it all began and to look at what we have become today. For most it's simply "Turkey Day". Not many actually take time to think about what Thanksgiving is all about. Yes we are to be thankful, and make our lists of Thanksgiving (which I will post for our family this week). BUT I believe that God also wants us to remember what Thanksgiving is, why we even celebrate it...look back to that 1st Thanksgiving. We need to be thankful first and foremost for GOD ordaining everything! Then second be thankful for those Pilgrims that God used to form our country.
On another note...Friday night we had friends over for pizza and brownies. We had a little concert too. Can you tell who's going to be the next "Allen Jackson", he LOVES the microphone! I hope you all have a great week!
